Lach DennisThe small village of Lach Dennis derives its name from the Old English laecc, meaning a bog, and the Dennis family which once had an estate here. A mile or so to the east, Shakerley Mere Nature Reserve is host to a diverse range of wildlife with Canada Geese, herons, mute swans and mallards a common sight. Cormorants fly here from their breeding grounds on the coast to feast on the fish and more exotic species arrive at different times of the year. The lake is stocked with carp, bream, roach and perch, and day permits are available for anglers. There’s a pleasant 1.5 mile walk around the mere. |
