Holmes ChapelIn the mid-1700s, the little village of Holmes Chapel was stirred by two important events. In 1738, John Wesley came and preached outside St Luke’s Church. Fifteen years later, on July 10th 1753, a disastrous fire swept through the village. When the flames were finally quenched, only two buildings had survived the blaze: St Luke’s Church and The Old Red Lion alongside. Both still stand.About 3 miles southeast of Holmes Chapel, Brereton Heath Country Park is a popular beauty spot where the heathland and flower meadows are criss-crossed by a network of many footpaths. The former sand quarry provides a congenial habitat for a range of species, details of which can be obtained from the park ranger at the Visitor Centre. The lake here is used for angling, canoeing and windsurfing. |
