Higher KinnertonOne of the oldest and most picturesque coaching inns in north Wales, the Royal Oak also boasts a resident ghost and stands where one of the most famous trees in the country once towered. Here in September 1644 King Charles I, fleeing Cromwell’s troops after his defeat at Chester, evaded his pursuers by hiding amidst the branches of the Kinnerton Oak. The landlord of the Royal Oak has inscribed this romantic tale around the walls of the old beamed snug. It’s just one of the many charming features here, along with the inglenook crackling with log fires and the fascinating collection of old pots and water jugs. |
