HatchmereIn medieval times the village of Hatchmere was surrounded by the Forest of Delamere, the largest of Cheshire’s three woodlands. It stretched from the Mersey to Nantwich and although there were small areas of pasture and arable land, its status as a royal forest meant that the prime duty of those in charge of it was the preservation of the “beasts of the chase”. It was not until 1812 that Delamere was officially “disafforested” and today Delamere Forest covers little more than an area about two miles long and one mile deep. From Hatchmere there are attractive trails through the woods and around Hatch Mere, the sizeable lake that gives the village its name. |
