GoostreyThe village of Goostrey is a quiet little place on a minor road just north of Holmes Chapel but famous for its annual gooseberry shows where competitors vie to produce the plumpest berries. The name of the village has nothing to do with gooseberries but derives from a personal name, Godhere, and the Saxon word for tree. It’s not known if there is any connection with the 1200-year-old yew tree in the graveyard of St Luke’s Church. |
