Gawsworth

Gawsworth Hall is a captivating sight with its dazzling black and white half-timbered walls and lofty three-decker Tudor windows. The Hall was built in 1480 by the Fitton family, one of whose descendants, the celebrated beauty, Mary Fitton is believed to be the “Dark Lady” of Shakespeare’s sonnets. The Bard would no doubt approve of Gawsworth’s famous open-air theatre where performances range from his own plays to Gilbert and Sullivan operas with the Hall serving as a lovely backdrop. Surrounded by a huge park, Gawsworth, to quote its owner Timothy Richards, “is the epitome of a lived-in historic house”. Every room that visitors see (which is virtually every room in the house) is in daily use by him and his family. And what wonderful rooms they are. Myriad windows bathe the rooms in light, the low ceilings and modest dimensions radiate calm, and even the richly-carved main staircase is conceived on a human scale. The beautifully sited church, and the lake nearby, add still more to the appeal of this magical place. The Hall and grounds are open from 2 to 5 Sundays only (daily in July and August).
