Gatesheath

Occupying a Victorian farmhouse in Gatesheath, the Country Centre at New Russia Hall is a unique attraction. To begin with, there’s the Orchard Paddock, a magnet for children with its appealing collection of farm animals and pets, swings and crazy golf. Anyone interested in flower arranging can watch the staff of the Dried Flower Workshop creating unique arrangements - for sale, or you can buy all the materials to make your own - and painted plant pots, boxes and small pieces of furniture. There is a comprehensive display of greeting cards and gifts, a tearoom, and Uncle Peter’s Fudge Kitchen where you can try the superbly tasty fudge. The name New Russia Hall has nothing to do with Russia but comes from a corruption of ‘rushes’, which once grew abundantly in the marshy ground nearby and provided the basic materials for local basket-makers.
