FarndonBuilt on a hillside overlooking the River Dee, Farndon is literally a stone’s throw from Wales. Most travellers agree that the best approach to the principality is by way of this little town and its ancient bridge. Records show that building of the bridge began in 1345 and it is one of only two surviving medieval bridges in the county, the other being in Chester. From Farndon’s bridge, riverside walks by the Dee extend almost up to its partner in Chester. During the Civil War, Farndon’s strategic position between Royalist North Wales and parliamentarian Cheshire led to many skirmishes here. Those stirring events are colourfully depicted in a stained glass window in the church, although only the Royalist heroes are included. Farndon was the birthplace, in 1542, of the cartographer John Speed. He followed his father’s trade as a tailor, married and had 18 children. He was nearly 50 before he found time to devote all his energies to researching and producing his beautifully drawn maps, which he did until his death at the age of 87. |
