DisleyThe small town of Disley lies close to the Macclesfield Canal and little more than half a mile from Lyme Park Country Park. At the heart of the 1400 acre park where red and fallow deer roam freely stands Lyme Park (National Trust), home of the Legh family for more than 600 years. The elegant Palladian exterior of this great house encloses a superb Elizabethan mansion. Amongst the many treasures on show are carvings by Grinling Gibbons, tapestries from Mortlake, and a unique collection of English clocks. The house featured many times in the BBC’s 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice when it represented the exterior of Pemberley, the home of Elizabeth Bennett’s curmudgeonly lover, Mr Darcy. The “Pemberley Trail” guides visitors to the bridge from which Elizabeth (Jennifer Ehle) first sees the imposing building; on through the courtyard and garden to the pool in which Mr Darcy (Colin Firth) takes a sexy dip – a scene which was definitely not part of Jane Austen’s original novel. Don’t expect the interior of Lyme Park to match the rooms shown in the series – all the “Pemberley” interiors were filmed at Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire. |
