Church MinshullThis picturesque little village is known to a few people as the home of Elizabeth Minshull before she became the third wife of the poet John Milton in 1660. There’s a fine old hostelry here, The Badger Inn, which has been designated as a Building of Historic and Architectural Interest and is attractively located close to the River Weaver. Built in 1760, the inn was originally known as the Brookes Arms, named after the family who were great landowners in the Mere and Tatton area. In a play of words on their name, the Brookes coat of arms bears two brocks, the old English name for badgers, (brocks/Brookes), and so led to the inn’s present name. |
