Capesthorne HallThe home of the Bromley-Davenport family for generations, Capesthorne Hall dates back to 1730 but, following a fire in 1861, was remodelled and extended by the celebrated architects Blore and Salvin. The present building presents a magnificent medley of Elizabethan style turrets and towers, domes and cupolas while inside the house there is a wealth of portraits and artefacts collected by family members during the course of their Grand Tours. In medieval times the head of the Bromley-Davenport family held the post of Chief Forester of Macclesfield Forest which gave him authority to mete out summary justice to anyone who transgressed the savage forestry laws. As a reminder of their power, the family crest includes the severed head of a felon. One of these crests, on the main staircase built in the 1860s, was commissioned by the staunchly Conservative Bromley-Davenport of the day and the felon’s head is instantly recognisable as the Liberal leader of the day, W.E. Gladstone. |
