BosleyTo the east of Bosley town centre runs the Macclesfield Canal, one of the highest waterways in England, running for much of its length at more than 500 feet above sea level. Thomas Telford was the surveyor of the 26-mile long route, opened in 1831, which links the Trent & Mersey and the Peak Forest canals. Between Macclesfield and Congleton, the canal descends over a hundred feet in a spectacular series of 12 locks at Bosley, before crossing the River Dane via Telford’s handsome iron viaduct. Other unusual features of this superbly engineered canal are the two “roving bridges” south of Congleton. These swing from one bank to the other where the towpath changes sides and so enabled horses to cross over without having to unhitch the tow-rope. |
