AntrobusJust a couple of miles from the magnificent Arley Hall and its world-famous gardens, is the pleasing little village of Antrobus, the only place in Britain to bear this name. Even the Oxford Dictionary of English Place Names is baffled by Antrobus: “Unexplained” it says curtly, adding as its excuse, “Hardly English”. But what could be more English than The Antrobus Arms? Set in one and a half acres of land and surrounded by scenic countryside, this impressive building was first licensed in 1760 and ever since has been providing good food and fine ales for both locals and for travellers along the main A559 between Warrington and Northwich. |
