Alderley Edge

Alderley Edge takes its name from the long, wooded escarpment, nearly two miles long, that rises 600ft above sea level and culminates in sandy crags overlooking the Cheshire Plain. In Victorian times, this spectacular area was the private preserve of the Stanley family and it was only under great pressure that they grudgingly allowed the “Cottentots” of Manchester access on occasional summer weekends. It was the Stanley daughters who took great umbrage when the Wizard Inn hung up a new sign. They demanded its removal. The Merlin-like figure depicted could, they claimed, be taken as a representation of their father, Lord Stanley, at that time a virtual recluse and more than a little eccentric. Nowadays, however, walkers can roam freely along the many footpaths through the woods, one of which will take them to Hare Hill Gardens, a little-known National Trust property. These Victorian gardens include fine woodland, a walled garden themed in blue, white and yellow flowers, and huge banks of rhododendrons. There is access by way of gravel paths for the less able.
