Acton BridgeThe bridge here crosses the River Weaver, a waterway whose scenic merits have been largely unsung. The Vale Royal Council has developed the Weaver Valley Way which allows walkers to enjoy some lovely stretches, particularly those between Weaver Bridge and Saltersford Locks, and the 6-mile route from Northwich to Winsford Marina.During World War I, Acton Bridge made an unusual contribution to the war effort. Near the village was a plantation of hazel pear trees whose fruit is quite inedible but whose juice provided the khaki dye for soldiers’ uniforms. |
