LlanrhystudTo the south of the village, which lies near the confluence of the Rivers Wyre and Carrog, are the two former hill forts of Castell Bach and Castell Mawr, which are separated by a vale known as “the dell of slaughter” – a reference to an ancient battle. More remains can be found to the east, this time of Caer Penrhos. Built in around 1150 by Cadwaladr ap Gryffydd, the castle was razed to the ground some 50 years later to avoid it falling into a rival’s hands. |
