Llanina

This tiny village, with a long tradition of fishing, is also associated with the legend of King Ina, king of the West Saxons, who succeeded to the throne in AD688. One day, in the early 8th century, a ship was wrecked on the rocks close to the village during a violent storm. A local fisherman and his wife and daughter, having seen the disaster, rowed out to rescue the stricken sailors. Once safe, the family, unable to understand the language spoken by the shipwrecked strangers, sent for a monk who told them that they had saved King Ina. In thanksgiving, the king built a church from which the present Parish Church of St Ina, built in 1850, takes its name. Cerrig Ina (Ina’s Stones) can be seen offshore and mark the spot where the original church stood.
