AberporthThe original village of Aberporth consisted of small, single-storeyed cottages with thick mud walls and thatched roofs that reflected the simple and hard lives of those living in this fishing and farming community. At one time Aberporth became famous for its herring industry as great shoals of the fish came to feed and spawn in the shallow waters of this sheltered part of the Cardigan Bay coast. Today, the village is a small yet thriving resort that is popular with yachtsmen.A little way up the coast is the National Trust’s beach at Penbryn, an SSSI, part of the Ceredigion Heritage Coast and a good spot for insect, bird and dolphin spotting. The approach to this popular, sandy beach is by way of Hoffnant Valley from the Trust’s car park at Llanborth Farm, where a shop, café and toilets are open in season. The valley is known locally as Cwm Lladron, ‘Robbers Valley’, probably because of past smuggling connections. |
