Risca

To the south of Risca, at High Cross on the Monmouthshire Canal, is the Fourteen Locks Canal Centre, where this complicated systems of locks was constructed to raise and lower barges some 168 feet in just half a mile, with only the minimal wastage of water. There are several walks from the centre, which take in the locks, ponds, channels, tunnels and weirs, as well as the countryside in which the centre is sited. Open from Easter to September, the visitor centre has a display that follows the opening (in 1796), the growth and the heyday of the Monmouthshire Canal, and the decline that started when the railways began to take over from water transport.
