GrosmontThis village takes its name from the French, ‘gros mont’, meaning big hill; it is the site of Grosmont Castle, the most northerly of the Three Castles. Now in ruins, Grosmont started life as a steep earthen mound but, after having been replaced by a stone fortification, it was unsuccessfully besieged by both Llywelyn the Great and Owain Glyndwr. During exploration of the ruins, an Arabic ‘faience jar’ was found here - undoubtedly a relic from the Crusades. The 13th-century Parish Church of St Nicholas has an octagonal tower surmounted by a spire. The nave has an unusual tomb - the stone carving of the recumbent knight above it was never finished. |
