WytonWyton is mentioned in the Domesday Book and is thought to have been founded in the 8th century. It is a popular tourist destination thanks to its proximity to Houghton Mill (National Trust) and opportunities for riverside walks, as well as its charming thatched buildings and shops. The large, impressive, timber-built water mill dates from the 17th century – and is now the only working watermill on the Great Ouse. Potto Brown, a Quaker merchant and non-conformist, was one of its famous millers. It has a beautiful river-side location, which provides some lovely walks. There are hands-on exhibits for all the family to enjoy here, a tea room and bookshop, as well as stone-ground flour to buy. Tel: 01480 301494 for opening times, and milling days (subject to river levels). |
