Thorney
Thorney Abbey, the Church of St Mary and St Botolph, is still a
dominating presence, even though what now stands is but a small part of what was
once one of the greatest of the Benedictine abbeys. Gravestones in the
churchyard are evidence of a Huguenot colony that settled here after fleeing
France in the wake of the St Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572 to settle the
drained fenland at the request of Oliver Cromwell.
