Soham

Downfield Windmill was built in 1726 as a smock mill, destroyed by gales and rebuilt in 1890 as an octagonal tower mill.

Unfortunately, another storm a few years ago once again caused extensive damage to this beautiful and unique building, and the future of the mill is now unsure. It is hoped the funding for repairs (an estimated £100,000!) can be found, and English Heritage has acknowledged the need for desperate restoration in their annual “Buildings at Risk” register.

St Andrew’s Church is a fine example of the Perpendicular style of English Gothic architecture. Very grand and elaborate, it was built on the site of a 7th century cathedral founded by St Felix of Burgundy. The 15th century west tower has an ornate parapet and two medieval porches. Note, too, the chancel with its panelling and stained glass.

A plaque in Soham commemorates engine driver Ben Gimbert and fireman James Nightall, who were taking an ammunition train through the town when a wagon caught fire. They uncoupled it and began to haul it into open country. The wagon exploded, killing the fireman and a signalman.
