Crowland
It is hard to imagine that this whole area was once entirely wetland and
marshland, dotted with inhospitable islands. Crowland was one such island, then
known as Croyland; back in the 7th century, a small church and hermitage was
established, which was later to become one of the nation's most important
monasteries. The town's impressive parish church was just part of the great
edifice thatonce stood on the site. A wonderful exhibition can be found in the
Abbey at Crowland, open all year round. The remains cover a third of the
Abbey's original extent.
