West LintonWest Linton is a delightful village, and one of the hidden gems of Peeblesshire. The picturesque St Andrews Parish Church of 1781 stands in the middle of the village, and the surrounding gravestones testify to the craftsmanship of the many stone carvers who used to live in the area. The local Whipman Ceremonies take place in June each year. They originated in 1803, when some local agricultural workers decided to form a benevolent society known as the “Whipmen of Linton”. Now the weeklong festivities include honouring the Whipman (meaning a carter) and his Lass. In the centre of the village stands Lady Gifford’s Well, with a stone carving of 1666 on one of its sides. One of the many streets in West Linton is quaintly called Teapot Lane, as a tap once stood here where the women of the village drew water into teapots to make tea. |
