StoboStobo Kirk, one of the oldest and most beautiful in the area, has a Norman tower, nave and chancel, with some later features and additions. The 19th century mansion, Stobo Castle, is set in some lovely grounds and is now one of Scotland’s most luxurious health farms and spa.Two miles south, along the B712, is the Dawyck Botanic Garden and Arboretum, an outpost of the National Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. It sits beside the Scrape Burn, another tributary of the Tweed, and houses a unique collection of conifers, rhododendrons and other tree species within its 50 acres. The original garden was laid out in the late 1600s by Sir James Naesmyth, who imported trees and shrubs from North America. In 1832 the garden was landscaped by Italian gardeners who built bridges, terraces and steps. |
