St. BoswellsThis village is named after St Boisil, who was an abbot of the Celtic monastery at Old Melrose in the 7th century. The centrepiece of the village is its green, which hosts a fair on July 18th (St Boisil’s Day) each year. In past times, this fair was one of the largest in the country, and attracted people - especially gypsies - from all over the Borders and beyond. At one time more than 1000 horses were offered for sale at the fair. |
