MellerstainAncestral home of the Earls of Haddington, Mellerstain is a grand mansion originally designed by William Adam in the 1720s, and completed by his son Robert in 1778. Although the exterior is rather austere, the interior is glorious. Robert Adam was at the peak of his powers and the Library at Mellerstain shows his genius at its most inventive, assured and appealing - “One of the most beautiful 18th century rooms in Europe” according to Nigel Nicolson. The lovely rooms house a remarkable collection of period furniture, family portraits and paintings by Van Dyck, Gainsborough, Allan Ramsay and many others. Outside, the attractive Italian terraces were laid out in 1910 by Sir Reginald Blomfield and give excellent views out over a small artificial loch towards the Cheviots. |
