InnerleithenThe Rivers Tweed and Leithen meet in this charming little town which was the model for Sir Walter Scott’s St Ronan’s Well. It used to be a spa town and the St. Ronan’s Well Interpretive Centre at Well’s Brae explains the history of the wells, whose waters were full of sulphur and other minerals. You can even sample the water if you’re brave enough. In the High Street is Robert Smail’s Printing Works (National Trust for Scotland). This was a genuine print works that still retained many of its original features and fittings when taken over by the Trust in 1987. Now you can see how things were printed more than a century ago, and even have a go at typesetting yourself. |
