Eccles

In the mid 1100s, a Cistercian nunnery was founded here by the Earl of Dunbar. Remnants of it have been built into the wall surrounding the graveyard of the present Eccles Parish Church, built in 1774. The nunnery was badly damaged during English raids in the 1540s.
