Earlston

The small town of Earlston is dominated by Black Hill which gives a good view of the surrounding countryside. One of Scotland’s earliest poets, Thomas Learmont of Earlston, was born here in about 1220. Also known as Thomas the Rhymer, Thomas of Erceldoune or True Thomas, he attained an almost supernatural status, as he was also a seer who could predict the future. His prophecies included Alexander III’s death in 1285, the victory of Bruce over the English at Bannockburn in 1314 and Scotland’s defeat by the English at Flodden in 1513. Some ruins in the town are supposed to be of his home, Rhymer’s Tower.
