CockburnspathTwo features of interest here: ruined Cockburnspath Tower, dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, and the Mercat Cross at the heart of the village which was erected in 1503 to celebrate the marriage of James IV to Margaret Tudor, the daughter of Henry VII of England. The village sits close to Pease Dean, a Scottish Wildlife Trust Reserve, where you can see butterflies, lichens and rare mosses. Pease Bridge was built in in 1783 and at the time was the highest stone bridge in Europe. The village is also the eastern terminus of the Southern Upland Way. |
