Abbey St Bathans

The pretty village of Abbey St Bathans lies in the steep-sided valley of the Whiteadder Water, deep within the Lammermuir Hills, five miles north of Duns. It is truly a hidden gem, but its name is misleading, as there was never an abbey here. However, in 1170, Ada, Countess of Dunbar, founded the priory of St Mary in the village, and parts of the priory church have been incorporated into the present Parish Church.

The tombstone of a former prioress, which touchingly shows her pet dog, is preserved within the present church.

To the south of Abbey St Bathans, at Cockburn Law, are the ruins of the Iron Age Edins Hall Broch, one of the few brochs (a round, fortified stone tower) to be found in Southern Scotland. It is named after Etin, a legendary giant with three heads who is said to have terrorised the area in olden times.
