Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch

This pretty little village with its whitewashed Georgian almshouses attracted pilgrims in their thousands in medieval times. They came to drink from the Holy Well where a 6th century hermit had invested a waterfall with healing powers capable of curing "scabs and the itch" and even smallpox. St Dyfnog would do penance by standing under the waterfall in his hair shirt, thus transferring his virtues to the water. As late as the 1700s his "mighty spring was still much resorted to" and it was then that the 'bath' was paved with marble which is still in place.

The nearby Church of St Dyfnog is entered by a striking timber porch richly adorned with carving from about 1530 but its chief treasure is a marvellous Tree of Jesse window. The Tree of Jesse, most often seen depicted in church windows, details the family tree of Christ down from Jesse, the father of King David. This superb window, made in 1553, was saved from destruction during the Civil War by being buried in a dug-out chest, which can also be seen in the church.
