ThatchamBelieved to be the oldest village in Britain, it is hard to imagine that this now large suburb of Newbury was once a small place. Thatcham Moor is one of the largest areas of inland freshwater reed beds in the country. As well as the reeds, which can grow up to six feet in height, the area supports numerous species of marshland and aquatic plants. Birds also abound here and it is an important breeding ground for reed and sedge warblers.Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre, situated close to the Thatcham Moors Local Nature Reserve, is a multi-activity based centre where visitors are encouraged to look, listen, touch and learn through an exciting range of interactive exhibits. In Discovery Hall they can find out what lives beneath the lake, get a bird’s-eye view of the world, learn about local and global environmental issues or watch the wildlife from the comfort of the lakeside observation area. Open 10am to 5pm April to October. Closed Mondays except Bank Holidays and School Holidays. |
