SonningThis pretty little village leading down to the Thames is a popular spot to visit, especially on summer weekends. In 1399, after he had been deposed, Richard II brought his young bride Isabella here to be looked after in the palace of the Bishops of Salisbury. Her ghost is said to appear on the paths beside the river. On Grove Street stands Turpin’s, a house that belonged to the aunt of Dick Turpin and which provided occasional refuge for the notorious highwayman. Behind the wall of the old bishop’s palace is Deanery Gardens, a house built in 1901 to the design of Sir Edwin Lutyens. |
