GreenhamGreenham Common and the adjacent Crookham Common make up the largest area of lowland heathland in Berkshire. In 1941 the common land was taken over by the Air Ministry and became an important military base, first for British squadrons and then for the US Air Force. In 1981 nuclear-armed Cruise missiles arrived at Greenham and the site became notorious for anti-nuclear demonstrations. The airbase is gradually being returned to nature and the site is once again open to the public. Designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), it is home to many rare and endangered plants and animals. |
