Donnington

Despite being so close to the town of Newbury, Donnington has managed to retain its village identity and atmosphere. To the west of the village, and visible from the road, is Donnington Grove House. Built in 1759, and designed by the architect John Chute, this was the home, in the late 18th century, of the Brummell family; Beau Brummell,
the instigator of the Bath Society, lived here as a child.

However, most visitors to the village come to see Donnington Castle (English Heritage), a late-14th century defence that was built by Sir Richard Abberbury. Once a magnificent structure, only the twin-towered gatehouse survives amidst the impressive earthworks. The castle had its most eventful period during the Civil War when it was the scene of one of the longest sieges of the conflict. Charles I’s troops were held here for 20 months and it was during this period that most of the castle was destroyed.
