New CumnockThe parish of New Cumnock was carved from the much older parish of Cumnock in 1650, with a church being built on the site of Cumnock Castle, once owned by the Dunbars. The ruins of this church can still be seen.It was near here that the Knockshinnoch Mining Disaster took place in 1950. A slurry of mud and peat filled some workings that were close to the surface, trapping 129 miners underground. The rescuers showed great bravery and 116 men were eventually brought out alive. A feature film, The Brave Don’t Cry, was made about the disaster in 1952.To the south of the village is Glen Afton, through which flows the Afton Water. A cairn marks the spot where Burns was inspired to write Flow Gently Sweet Afton. |
