AuchinleckBurns is not the only famous literary person associated with Ayrshire. Though born in Edinburgh, James Boswell was the son of a Court of Session judge who lived in Auchinleck House, perhaps the finest example of an eighteenth century country villa to survive in Scotland. The judge had the house built in about 1760 as his country seat, and Boswell brought the great Dr Johnson there to meet him when the pair were touring Scotland. They didn’t hit it off.Auchinleck House is now owned by the Landmark Trust and the ground floor of the house, including Museum Room, is open for visits by appointment on Wednesday afternoons during the season. The grounds are open throughout the spring and summer.Boswell himself died in 1795, and lies in a small mausoleum attached to the old Auchinleck Kirk, which is no longer used for worship. It now houses a museum dedicated to the writer and biographer. |
