GlenbarrVisitors to Scotland are understandably fascinated by the clan system, and at Glenbarr Abbey they can enjoy a privileged insight into this unique element of Scottish society, as notable for its ferocious loyalties as for its sometimes barbarous feuds. The family seat of the Macalisters of Glenbarr, the abbey was built in the late 1700s and then greatly enlarged around 1815 with the addition of a striking west wing in the Gothic Revival style. This beautiful house is the home of Jeanne Macalister who personally conducts visitors around its many treasures. Guided by someone with such personal knowledge you will be introduced to a veritable wealth of exhibits: antique toys, an original Spode dinner service, a collection of Sevres and Derby china, family jewellery, 19th century fashions, wonderful patchworks, a unique thimble collection, and even a pair of gloves worn by Mary, Queen of Scots. |
