AmlwchSouth of this seaside town lies the pock-marked ParysMountain, which has provided copper for prospectors from as early as Roman times. In 1768 a copper boom helped make Anglesey the copper centre of the world, but by 1820 the rush was over as prices fell and the mineral deposits became exhausted. The harbour, which was built during more prosperous times, is now used manly by pleasure craft. In its heyday, Amlwch had 6,000 inhabitants and 1,000 ale houses. Th Amlwch Railway Museum has displays on trains and associated memorabilia. |
