A branch of the Imperial War Museum, Duxford is Europe's premier aviation museum. It was built on a former RAF and USAF fighter base that saw service throughout the Second World War, and the preserved hangars, a control tower and operations room retain a period atmosphere and form the historic heart of the 85-acre complex.

Over 400, 000 visitors come to Duxford each year to see the biplanes and the Spitfires, the Concorde and the Gulf War jets that are among the 180 historic aircraft on show. An award-winning modern building designed by Lord Foster houses the American Air Museum with aircraft both on the ground and suspended from the roof as though in flight. Exhibits here range from a U2 Spyplane to a T-10 Tankbuster and the mighty B-52 Stratofortress. Tanks and artillery are on show in the exciting Land Warfare Hall, which houses 50 military vehicles and artillery pieces in a series of realistic and authentic battlefield scenes.

Important air shows take place several times each year, featuring resident aircraft, current military aircraft, civilian display teams and solo aerobatic performers. This wonderful museum, which lies south of Cambridge at Junction 10 of the M11, is open throughout the year apart from three days at Christmas.
