There has been a manor house at Sledmere since medieval times. The present house was built in 1751 by Sir Christopher Sykes 2^nd Baronet. Sir Christopher employed fellow Yorkshireman Joseph Rose, the most famous English plasterer of his day, to execute the decoration of Sledmere. Rose's magnificent work, unique in his career, and parkland planned by 'Capability Brown', have combined to create one of Yorkshire's hidden treasures.

The gardens and parkland can offer enjoyment for all, from the beautiful 18^th Century walled Rose Garden and recently laid out knot-garden, to the acres of open space and woodland. Enjoy a leisurely stroll, long walk or just a relaxing summer picnic in the grounds along with the grazing deer nearby.

When the need for refreshment arises try something different in the Bistro-Café', anything from a light snack to a delicious meal, before you move on to the Exhibition Centre, Waggoners Museum, the village, Monuments and Church. Sledmere's famous pipe organ is played for Visitors - Wednesday, Friday and Sunday 2.00pm - 4.00pm.
