Jorvik Viking Centre

16 Coppergate Walk, York, North Yorkshire YO1 9NT

The world famous JORVIK centre in York transports visitors back in time to experience the sights, sounds and - perhaps most famously - the smells of 10th century York. Over 20 years of archaeological research led to the new re-creation of Viking Age York in JORVIK, which re-opened to wide acclaim in April 2001. The new JORVIK now presents a far broader view and more detailed depiction of life in the Viking Age.

Visitors to the centre are shown that, in AD975, York was a bustling commercial centre where 10,000 people lived and worked. Travelling in state-of-the-art time capsules, visitors are carried past and through two storey dwellings, enjoying views over backyards and rooftops, and even glimpsing the Viking Age equivalent of today's Minster.

February 2002 saw the launch of the new 'Viking Voyagers' exhibition. Visitors can get the low-down on all aspects of sea-faring from trading in the Far East and raiding in the North East, to life on board and the technicalities of mastering the ocean waves. The year-long exhibition features hands-on activities, artefacts and new academic research around the theme of Viking ships and is not to be missed.
