The Henry Moore Institute in Leeds is a unique resource devoted exclusively to sculpture, with a programme comprising exhibitions, collections and research. The centre was established by the Henry Moore foundation as a partnership with Leeds city council in 1982. In 1993 it moved from Leeds city art gallery to the newly converted Henry Moore institute next door.Whereas the Henry Moore foundation at Moore's home in Perry Green in Hertfordshire devotes its activities exclusively to the work of Henry Moore himself, in Leeds they are concerned with the subject of sculpture in general; both historic and contemporary, and of any nationality. Though some exhibitions may travel from elsewhere, most are generated from within, and draw on research activity or collection development. The content of the collections is substantially British and is designed to represent a cross section of material which all, in different ways, represents and documents sculptural activity. |
