Conisbrough Castle has been standing guard over the Dearne valley for nearly 850 years and is now open for families to enjoy all year round. Built in 1180 by Hamelin Plantagenet, one of England's most influential noblemen, this castle has weathered the centuries in remarkable condition, helped by an ambitious reconstruction project which has added new floors and a roof to the splendid circular tower. The fame of this landmark has been spread worldwide thanks to Sir Walter Scott's classic novel Ivanhoe, from where the name of the present managing agent The Ivanhoe Trust arises. The Trust employs specialist guides who run spectacular medieval re-enactments, take educational and leisure tours, and strive to bring eight centuries to history of life for the new millennium. The castle tearooms, in the former custodian's cottage, also feature an exhibition of old photographs of the area donated by the local heritage society.Open from 10am until 5pm April - end September and until 4pm October - end March. Last admission is 40 minutes before closing. |
