The mining of silver-rich lead ore was an important industry in the Plynlimon Mountains of mid-Wales in the 1860s. Most of the mines were later abandoned but Llywernog Lead & Silver Mine survived and was saved from dereliction by the late Dr Stephen Harvey and his son Peter, who now run this seven-acre heritage site. Visitors can follow the Miners Trail, take the underground tour to the Great Chasm and see the working water wheels, mining machinery and mineral displays. The site, which has a souvenir shop and tea room, is open from April to October; closed Saturdays except at Easter and in August.
