Shambellie House

Museum of Costume, New Abbey, Dumfries DG2 8HQ

Tel: 01387 850375

The house was designed by Scottish architect David Bryce and built in 1856 for the Stewart family. In 1977 Charles Stewart, the great grandson of the original owner, donated the house and his costume collection to the National Museums of Scotland. Charles Stewart was in his own words `that obsessed and demented being, a collector.' He searched through market stalls, friends' attics and forgotten trunks for interesting items of clothing. Browse through the gift shop and choose from our unique range of Victorian style gifts. Picnic on the lawn or take a stroll through the wooded grounds. You can also enjoy delicious homebaking in the below stairs tearoom.
