Inveraray Jail, the former County Courthouse and prison for Argyll, tells the story of the men, women and children who were tried and served their sentences here. Fascinating displays give an insight into the harshness of prison life in the 19th century, including cells where murderers, madmen and children were crammed in together, the courtroom where trials took place and the airing yards where prisoners were allowed to take an hours exercise each day. An exhibition of items such as branding irons and thumb screws illustrates punishments inflicted before the days of prisons. There is an excellent range of gifts and souvenirs available at the Jail Shop.
